HOW TO USE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
The D6K with Winch and D6K with Ripper Dozers have three electronic control modules (ECMs): engine, machine,
and implement. An ECM has the ability to detect problems with the electrical/electronic system and with engine or
machine operation. When an ECM detects an electrical or electronic system malfunction, the ECM will generate a
diagnostic code. The diagnostic codes are logged with the time and number of occurrences. Codes may be
retrieved using two methods:
On-Board diagnosis using the machine Compact Instrument Cluster (CIC) monitoring system and Messenger
Cat Mil ET
This work package describes On-Board diagnostics.
The Compact Instrument Cluster (CIC) monitoring system receives information from the machine ECM through the
CAN communication circuit. The machine ECM gathers information from other modules to display data.
The CIC displays information using the following:
Twelve visual indicators
One audio action alarm
One LCD display
The machine ECM performs a self-test of the CIC each time the start switch is set to the RUN position. During the
CIC self-test, all gauge needles are set to the minimum position and will move smoothly to the maximum position.
All icons and segments will illuminate and all LED indicators will illuminate. The duration of the self-test will take
approximately three seconds, and the action alarm will activate at the beginning of the self-test for approximately
for one second. Upon completion of the self-test, the CIC will enter normal mode.
The Messenger Module receives information from the machine ECM, engine ECM, and the Cat Mil ET tool through
the data link communication circuit. The Messenger is an on-board monitoring system that displays machine
operating information. The Messenger allows the operator to adjust various machine settings and is capable of
displaying the following:
ECM diagnostic codes
Modes of machine operation
Operating characteristics of machine
With the start switch in the RUN position, the Messenger module will display the operating status of the following
