COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION
00027
WARN I N G
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam, and alkali. At operating temperature,
engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Radiator and all lines to heaters or engine
contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns. Allow engine and
coolant to cool before slowly removing filler cap to relieve cooling system pressure.
Engine must be stopped and radiator cap cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Failure to follow this warning may result in injury or death to personnel.
Visual Inspection of Cooling System
00027
1. Verify engine cooling system has correct type, mixture, and level of engine coolant (WP 0043).
2. Inspect all cooling system connections and hoses for leaks.
3. Inspect radiator core (Figure 1, Item 4) for the following:
a. Bent fins (Figure 1, Item 7), dirt, debris, and other restrictions. Clean or replace radiator core (WP 0039).
b. Coolant tank (Figure 1, Item 1) for Class III leaks. Replace tank if Class III leaks are present (WP 0042).
c.
Coolant tank cap and surface for damage and contaminants. Sealing surface must be clean.
d. Radiator core (Figure 1, Item 4) and engine cooling system for restriction, dirt, and other particulate
contamination. Clean or replace radiator (WP 0039).
e. Engine cooling system for oil.
4. Inspect aftercooler core (Figure 1, Item 5) for the following:
a. Bent fins (Figure 1, Item 6), dirt, debris, and other restrictions. Clean or replace aftercooler core (WP
0039).
b. Aftercooler core (Figure 1, Item 5) for restriction, dirt, and other particulate contamination. Clean or replace
aftercooler core (WP 0039).
c.
Aftercooler system for oil . Inspect turbocharger system for oil leaks (WP 0028). Clean or replace
aftercooler core (WP 0039).
5. Inspect hydraulic oil cooler core (Figure 1, Item 3) for the following:
a. Bent fins (Figure 1, Item 2), dirt, debris, and other restrictions. Clean or replace hydraulic oil cooler core
(WP 0039).
b. Hydraulic oil cooler core (Figure 1, Item 3) for restriction, dirt, and other particulate contamination. Clean or
replace hydraulic oil cooler core (WP 0039).
6. Inspect blades of hydraulic fan for wear, bent, cracks, and correct alignment (WP 0044).
